The Importance of Conclusions in Presentations

Just as the introductions is one of the most important components of a presentation, so too is the conclusion. Research shows that people are most likely to remember the first and last pieces of information they hear. So, a well-crafted conclusion is a necessary part of delivering a meaningful and memorable presentation.

It Summarizes the Information

One reason the conclusion is so important is because it provides a brief summary of the key points. This is helpful in ensuring that your main points are communicated clearly and that your audience is walking away with the intended information. It is also a good opportunity to repeat the core message, making the presentation feel like it has come full circle.

It Signals the End

A good conclusion lets the audience know that the presentation is coming to a close. If a speaker just suddenly stops speaking, the audience is left confused and disappointed. Instead, you want to make sure the audience is left with the right knowledge and proper closure.

It Aids Audience Memory

Research has shown that people remember information in a linear fashion and an individual’s ability to remember things, depends on when they heard it. For example, people are more likely to recall information that they heard first and last as opposed to everything in between. Therefore, the information delivered during the conclusion has the highest level of recall.

It’s Your Last Chance to Make an Impression

Finally, a strong conclusion is important because it’s a speaker’s final chance to explain their points and reiterate their core message. It is also their last chance to make an impression on their audience. The last thing a speaker says should set the tone, motivation, or inspiration for the presentation.Â
